The Bible and Popular Music: The Bible lurks in the background of Western civilization and modern culture, sometimes making a bold appearance and sometimes only recognized by the initiated. Why is this? This course will focus on the role of the Bible in/on popular music. We will explore the use of the Bible as inspiration and content in music by many artists, including Bob Dylan, Bob Marley, The Grateful Dead, Leonard Cohen, Regina Spektor and more.
Professor Alison Joseph (she/her) is the Director of Digital Projects at the Posen Library of Jewish Culture and Civilization. She is also an active teacher, public lecturer, and life-long camper. She received her Ph.D. in Hebrew Bible and Jewish Studies from the University of California, Berkeley, and her MA in Jewish Studies from Emory University
