Program Highlight!
A message from Jen Shandelman, our Summer Camp Director.
From rocks, seeds and soil, to birds, the seashore and leaves, each week this summer a group of preschoolers was able to participate in engaging, hands-on nature lessons via Zoom.
A package containing the materials needed for each lesson, along with a synopsis of the lesson, was delivered to their homes every two weeks so that each child had everything they needed in order to participate.
The children started their own rock collections, made chia seed sponge gardens, planted spider baby plants in recycled yogurt-cup terrariums, examined different seashells, constructed bird houses, and made sachets using dried herb leaves. They also learned lots of interesting information about each topic, such as chalk is actually a rock and birds do not have teeth!
Most importantly, although the lessons themselves were held indoors, the learning continued outdoors, especially when the children reported that they had “found a new rock” or “heard a bird in the morning time”. Instilling a love and appreciation for nature is so important for young children and it also can be helpful for parents to reconnect with the beauty of our natural world.

Lodging request for 69 year-old A.B., a man from Lancaster County who will be undergoing thoracic surgery at HUP on August 25. As he has a Hebrew first name, HfH Executive Director Mike Aichenbaum asked A.B. if he was Jewish, then shared that the essence of HOSTS for HOSPITALS involves the mitzvah of Hachnasot Or'chim, the active bringing in of guests. A.B. in turn shared that his illness aside, he is on a journey of rediscovering his Jewishness.
A.B, wife and their adult son and daughter need ‘private-setting lodging’ the nights of 8/24-8/29, e.g., an AirBnB, in-law suite, cottage house, corporate apartment, a currently vacant home or apartment, etc. Any place within about 45 minutes of HUP in University City would work. Just two bedrooms are needed, as A.B. will be a guest the first night only, and otherwise a family member will always be with him at the hospital.
Anyone interested in possibly offering lodging should contact HOSTS for HOSPITALS ASAP: 484-380-2999 / mike@hostsforhospital.org .
