It is very strange to write in the subject Summer Edition while I am writing this email sitting next to a fire in our fireplace - but that seems to fit the year we are having. Since Memorial Day is the unofficial start of summer, I want to share with you some of our early summer highlights. First, in line with Memorial Day, here are three special online opportunities for you:
Tonight (Sunday) at 7:00pm: Join the National Jewish Community Observance of Memorial Day
Tomorrow (Monday): Perhaps check out some of the many Memorial Day commemorations in Philadelphia
Wednesday at 7:00pm: To Bigotry, No Sanction: A Special Musical Performance featuring the Philadelphia Pops (please note, this takes place at the same time as our Men's Club Discussion with Rabbi Cooper)
We have three upcoming events that I want to highlight for you:
Men's Club Discussion with Rabbi Cooper - Wednesday, June 2nd at 6:30pm (in person and on zoom)
Sisterhood Closing Dinner - Tuesday, June 8th at 7:00pm
Breaking Bread with Mount Hermon Baptist Church - Sunday, June 13th at 3:00pm (we are really excited to have the opportunity to come together in person with the Church and look forward to seeing you there!) Please note the recipe swap!
With the start of summer, we are bringing back our challah program. Requests for Challah are due by Monday. You can receive a challah, offer to bake a challah or even do both! Last year, people loved connecting with one another and I hope you will join us for this great initiative.
The Hazzan is looking for Torah readers! With the summer, we need people to help with service rituals. The summer is a great time to challenge yourself to read from the torah - the reading can be short and Hazzan is excited to work with new Torah readers. Reach out to the Hazzan via email if you are willing.
This week, we are mailing our our membership packets. We are working on our Annual Meeting on Wednesday June 16th (which will be both in person and online). Have any great pictures from the year? Please send them my way. We hope to share with you some of the great things that have happened during this strange year and are really appreciative of you being a part of our community.
Internships: No anyone looking for an internship? We are looking to hire a Communications and a Finance intern over the summer and for the fall semester. This is a great (paid) opportunity to help both the synagogue and someone's resume. Email me if you know of anyone interested please.
There is always so much more that I am excited to share with you, but I will leave them for a future week. I hope you are staying dry and that you have the opportunity tomorrow to reflect on the sacrifice of so many for our country.
All the best,
Ken
