Hoping you are having a meaningful Memorial Day Weekend. I have shared this resource before, but Freedom's Feast often has good resources to put a day into perspective. If you are coming to Narberth for the parade, drop me a text (with your name), I will be marching with the Narberth Civic Association group and then going to the ceremony at 11am.
Yesterday, Rabbi Cooper's sermon spoke about the recent shooting in Texas and how we move forward.
Onto far more mundane issues: So my daughter has a spreadsheet where she tracks everything in pop culture that she is looking forward to: movies, books, tv shows, albums, etc. I was reminded of this as this past Friday premiered the new Top Gun movie, Obi Wan on Disney +, and Stranger Things on Netflix (for those paying attention, Harry Styles dropped his new album last Friday). There is a real power in having something to look forward to and focus on. This is true in the best of times, but especially in more challenging times. For our community, we have the Jewish Calendar that serves much the same purpose (and right now, we specifically have the Omer counting up to Shavuot - more on that later in this email). Throughout the year, and every week, there is often a holiday to be preparing for.
Our community has a number of things that we are looking forward to and that will bring us together over teh summer:
- Celebrating with Rabbi and Lori Cooper on June 10 - 12
- Devotion by the Ocean down the shore
- Welcoming in Rabbi Witkovsky and family. This calendar already includes:
- a special Shabbat Shalom weekend on July 8/9
- A welcoming event on Thursday, July 14
- Concerts on the lawn on August 3 and 10
- A class series with Rabbi Witkovsky on Tuesdays in July and August
- And more opportunities being planned
Shavuot coming up this weekend is a holiday that often flies below the radar for many. I have always loved the concept of the all night study session as a part of the holiday. Our community is so fortunate to have incredible teachers that volunteer their time for this. This year, our Tikkun Leyl Shavuot is on a Saturday night - check it out if you are able (even if you can't make it the whole night)
Wishing you a great week. And as my Mom would say, it is hot out, drink lots of water.
