TGIS: Thank God It's Shabbat: Hesed and Security Updates

12/02/2022 11:23:50 AM

Dec2

Shabbat Shalom,

As I have mentioned in previous years, the calendar has a weird quirk that the earliest sundown time is several weeks before the shortest day of the year, December 21st.  Tonight and next Shabbat are the earliest Shabbat candlelight times of the year. After this, our world will begin to stay brighter a little longer into the evening each night. As Hanukkah approaches, as Rabbi Witkovsky mentioned in his Pharisee article, we will have the opportunity to add our own light into the world.

One way that each of us can help add light to other’s lives is through acts of Hesed/ Kindness. Next Wednesday afternoon, a group will be coming into our kitchen to make large batches of soup that we will give out to those that are sick or in need of a friendly touch. If you are able to help cook, this week or another week, please reach out to Rachel Dunaief.

Our involvement form from the Installation weekend is still open. We have begun reaching out to different program areas. Please fill out the form and help our community.

SECURITY on the PLAYGROUND: We have had new combination locks installed on our black fence gates around the playground (this does not impact the gate at the back of the playground). They unfortunately installed the wrong locks – the gates now require a combination to be opened from the inside and the outside (we have already talked to our contractor about this and new locks are on their way). What this means – the gates are planned to be open for Shabbat, however, there is always a chance that someone closes them being them (please do not close the gates behind you on Shabbat). If you are a Shabbat walker, and would like the code, please email me. To the best of my knowledge, it is a completely manual system with no electronics or magnets).

Please see Rabbi Witkovsky's Pre-Shabbat Video where Rabbi Witkovsky talks about a biblical concept of karma from this week's Torah portion.

Wishing you a great weekend - gift shop will be open on Sunday for your Hanukkah needs,
