TGIS: Thank God It's Shabbat

Shabbat Shalom,

One of the inspirations for this weekly email was Elli Weinstein (z"l). Each week on Friday, Elli, with her husband David, would send out a Shabbat message filled with beautiful images of her gardens in Israel and in Wynnewood. It has been a lovely way of welcoming in Shabbat. At the bottom of this email, please see some photos of flowers from our synagogue grounds that Elli was very involved in.  This week, we will be moving our daily minyanim to the home of David and Elli Weinstein from Sunday morning until Thursday morning. The service will be in person and virtual on each of those days. Please see our condolence notice for more details.

There is once again no weekly video during vacation season, but Rabbi Witkovsky will be back tomorrow for Shabbat services as we celebrate the Aufruf of Naomi Elkins to Jared Rubin

In recent weeks, I have written about our commitment to Adult Education and some of the amazing offerings we have this year (check out our Pharisee for the full list).

Now, I want to highlight our first community service opportunity of this year, our Mitzvah Morning on Sunday, September 10. On that morning, there are three opportunities.

1. Helping to build our Sukkah Village - immediately following morning minyan.
2. Joining us for Reverse Tashlich, a park and creek cleanup (more on that below)
3. Our 7th grade Hebrew School families are baking and delivering treats for first responders in our area.

Reverse Tashlich is an international movement by Repair the Sea to transform an ancient ritual to tackle a modern problem (pollution). Before we cast our sins into the water, we will take the time to remove items from the water and surrounding areas that don't belong there. You can register for our program here. Please bring garden gloves with you.

Last week, as many know, I was given the opportunity to give the sermon. I made a comment that I want to pay more attention to what is going on in the world around us, particularly Ukraine. Rabbi Alan Iser recently wrote an article for the Jewish Exponent reflecting on his recent visit. Rabbi Iser will be speaking about his experiences at the synagogue following Shabbat services on Saturday, September 9.

Wishing you a great week and a meaningful Labor Day. Please enjoy the weekend calendar and photos below.

Ken
